	History of Sukhumvit Thanon Sukhumvit was open on 8 September 1936 and was originally called Thanon Krungthep-Samut Prakan. It starts from Ploenchit in Bangkok to Chachoengsao, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi and ends in Trat. The name was changed to Sukhumvit in memorial for Phrapisalsukhum on 10 December 1950. Phrapisalsukhum, born in 1899, served Thailand throughout his life. Being the first Thai graduating in engineering from MIT, USA, he started his work in department of highways at an entry level. His major accomplishments included expansion of major highways in Thailand in spite of a lot of obstacles and difficulties. Eventually he became the 5th director-general of the department. His love to the country has shown not only in his hard work in the department of highways but also in his membership in People’s Party and his brave involvement in Free Thai during the World War II. Phrapisalsukhum moved his house to Sukhumvit soi 34 since his time as being Free Thai. During that time, the area was considered suburb, desolate and dark, totally different from now where the beginning part of Sukhumvit is one of major business areas of Bangkok. Many expatriates have their residence along various sois of the road. BTS also runs over it from Ploenchit to the end of Bangkok.
